The New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) Leadership Council held an in-person strategic planning meeting in April 2025 (first in-person Council meeting since February 2020). Along with setting new NMNEC goals, the Council voted to pursue non-profit status for the organization. NMNEC Leadership Council members were joined by special guests, Dr. Nancy Ridenour and Dr. Diane Evans-Prior, who provided expertise in developing an action plan to achieve 501(c)(3) status and ensure continued support for NMNEC programs statewide.

Since that meeting, the Leadership Council has made steady progress toward this important milestone:

  • July – Approved new bylaws specific to NMNEC’s transition to non-profit status, including the selection of officers:
    • Krista Wood, BSN Co-Chair
    • Diane Wesner, ADN Co-Chair and Treasurer
    • Dawn Kittner, Secretary
In addition, the Council approved the addition of a ninth voting member not affiliated with a NMNEC program, strengthening broad representation.
  • August – Articles of Incorporation were approved by the State of New Mexico, and an Employer Identification Number (EIN) was issued by the IRS.
  • In Progress – The Leadership Council has passed a board resolution to establish a bank account for NMNEC, an important next step in formalizing operations. Work also continues on preparing the application to the IRS for official 501(c)(3) designation and to the State of New Mexico for a state tax identification number.

The transition to non-profit status marks an exciting new chapter for NMNEC, reinforcing our mission of advancing accessible, high-quality nursing education through statewide collaboration. Updates will continue to be shared as progress moves forward.
